IIT JAM 2023: TOPIC WISE NOTES

IIT JAM ELIGIBILITY

Candidates who qualify in JAM 2023 must fulfill the following Eligibility Requirements (ERs) for admissions to IITs.

  • Candidates should have passed an undergraduate degree or should be currently studying in their final year of undergradue programme. Proof of having passed the undergraduate degree should be submitted by September 29, 2023
  • Candidates promoted without a marksheet should produce a certificate stating the subjects studied in that semester/year duly signed by the Head of the Institute.
  • Foreign nationals with Indian degree are eligible to apply, subject to policy of the Admitting Institute.

At the time of admission, all admitted candidates will have to submit a Physical Fitness certificate from a registered medical practitioner in the prescribed form. The admitted candidates may also have to undergo a Physical Fitness test by a medical board constituted by the Admitting Institute. Admission is liable to be cancelled if a candidate is found physically unfit to pursue their chosen course of study.

NOTE:

  • It is responsibility of the candidates to prove that they satisfy the Minimum Educational Qualifications (MEQs) and Eligibility Requirements (ERs) for admission.

PREVIOUS YEAR QUESTIONS

FAQs

Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 55% aggregate marks (for General/OBC-NCL category) or 50% (for SC/ST/PwD categories) from a recognized university. There is no age limit or restriction on the number of attempts.

The subjects offered in IIT JAM include Biological Sciences (BL), Biotechnology (BT), Chemistry (CY), Geology (GG), Mathematics (MA), Mathematical Statistics (MS), and Physics (PH).

The application process for IIT JAM is typically conducted online. Candidates need to visit the official website of IIT JAM and fill out the application form, upload the required documents, and pay the application fee.

The exam consists of multiple-choice questions (MCQs), multiple-select questions (MSQs), and numerical answer type (NAT) questions. The duration of the exam is three hours, and it is conducted in English. The total marks and the number of questions vary for each subject.

Yes, there is negative marking for MCQs. For each incorrect answer to 1-mark questions, 1/3 mark is deducted, and for each incorrect answer to 2-mark questions, 2/3 mark is deducted. There is no negative marking for MSQs and NAT questions.

It is advisable to start your preparation early and create a study plan. Understand the exam pattern and syllabus thoroughly. Refer to standard textbooks, solve previous years’ question papers, and take mock tests to practice. Additionally, joining coaching classes or online courses can be helpful.

The participating institutes for IIT JAM include various IITs, IISc Bangalore, and other institutes like NITs, IISERs, etc. Admission to these institutes is based on the rank secured in the IIT JAM exam and the cutoff set by each institute.

The IIT JAM score is valid for one year. Candidates can use the score to apply for admissions in the academic year immediately following the year of the exam.
