Pursuing two degrees simultaneously in India!
In a media conference, UGC chairman M Jagadesh Kumar has revealed UGC’s latest plan to allow students to pursue two degrees at the same time, including full-time degree courses.
In accordance with National Education Policy (NEP) Kumar said that this plan aims to offer flexibility and personalisation of higher education and even allow multidisciplinary education across various domains for students.
UGC GUIDELINES ON PURSUING TWO DEGREES TOGETHER
Highlights regarding the guidelines for pursuing two degrees simultaneously are as follows:
- Students can pursue two UG, PG degrees/ diplomas in the same/ different streams from same/ different national or international universities.
- Students can pursue two full-time academic programmes in the physical mode provided that the class timings do not overlap. Eg. A student can pursue BA classes in the morning and BCom classes in the evening.
- Students will be able to pursue two UG or PG degrees/ diplomas together in the physical+physical mode or physical+online mode or online+online mode.
- Students will be allowed to pursue multidisciplinary programmes. For eg – BA History with BSc Mathematics, BCom Honors with a diploma in Data Science, etc.
- Students can only pursue courses of the same academic levels. For eg – A UG and a PG course cannot be opted together.
- Students can also pursue degrees starting in two different years. For eg – A student can start off with a BA History degree in 2022 and start a Data Science Diploma in 2023 while being a second year BA History student.
- This is not a dual degree, students will be given two different degrees.
- Degree or diploma programmes under ODL/Online mode shall be pursued with only such HEIs (Higher Education of India) which are recognized by UGC/Statutory Council/Govt. of India for running such programmes.
- This plan is expected to be applicable from this academic year i.e. 2022- 2023 onwards.
WHAT NEXT?
As the UGC guidelines are announced, soon the HEIs will be informed of the same.
The HEIs will soon make the necessary amendments as per the new guidelines and then the plans will be adopted, as this plan is to be applicable from the academic year i.e. 2022- 2023.
